No dia 8 de janeiro o mundo assistiu estarrecido à destruição do patrimônio cultural brasileiro depositado na sede dos poderes Executivo, Legislativo e Judiciário, em Brasília – que é, em si, um patrimônio cultural da humanidade. Em seguida às tristes imagens que não deixaram dúvida sobre a intenção de atacar a democracia brasileira, veio também a notícia da rápida ação dos órgãos federais responsáveis pela preservação do patrimônio no sentido de inventariar os estragos, salvaguardar os objetos e iniciar seu restauro.
Isso só foi possível em função da recriação do Ministério da Cultura e das novas presidências no Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (IPHAN) e do Instituto Brasileiro de Museus (IBRAM). O absurdo episódio mostrou a importância da existência de instituições públicas, de perfil técnico e fortalecidas politicamente para a proteção do patrimônio cultural brasileiro e da coesão social. O ICOM Brasil parabeniza o novo governo e se coloca à disposição para contribuir para a retomada das políticas públicas voltadas à preservação e promoção do patrimônio. Uma democracia, como vimos, não pode prescindir de suas referências culturais.

ICOM Brazil’s Statement on the resumption of public policies for Brazilian heritage
Last January 8th, the world witnessed the destruction of the Brazilian cultural heritage deposited in the headquarters of the Executive, Legislative and Judiciary powers, in Brasilia – which is, in itself, a cultural heritage of humanity. Following the sad images that left no doubt about the intention of attacking Brazilian democracy, there was also the
news of the quick action of the federal agencies responsible for the preservation of the heritage in the sense of inventorying the damage, safeguarding the objects and starting their restoration.
A rapid response was only possible due to the recreation of the Ministry of Culture and the new presidencies at the Institute of National Historical and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN) and the Brazilian Institute of Museums (IBRAM). The absurd episode showed the importance of public institutions with a technical profile, politically strengthened for the protection of Brazilian cultural heritage, in service of the general public interest and social cohesion. ICOM Brazil congratulates the new government and makes itself available to contribute to the resumption of public policies aimed at preserving and promoting heritage. A democracy, as we have seen, cannot do without its cultural references.
